{"id":278,"date":"2014-05-26T20:10:34","date_gmt":"2014-05-27T02:10:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/philarmitage.net\/blog\/?p=278"},"modified":"2014-05-26T20:11:42","modified_gmt":"2014-05-27T02:11:42","slug":"a-fisheye-in-taiwan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/philarmitage.net\/blog\/?p=278","title":{"rendered":"A fisheye in Taiwan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Back when the internet was young, and <a href=\"http:\/\/photo.net\/\">photo.net<\/a> was <em>the<\/em> place to learn about photography, I saw a great fisheye image by Daniel Bayer of climbers traversing Capitol Peak&#8217;s famous <a href=\"http:\/\/photo.net\/photodb\/photo?photo_id=186677\" title=\"knife-edge ridge\">knife-edge ridge<\/a>. I haven&#8217;t seen many since. Fisheyes &#8211; especially the circular variety that project a full hemisphere onto a circular image &#8211; are mostly deployed for novelty effect (think comically distorted kid with nose close to the front element), or in pretty well-defined shooting situations (I&#8217;m sure we&#8217;ll see some for the opening ceremony of the World Cup). That said, I&#8217;ve always wanted to try one. As explained in this <a href=\"http:\/\/michel.thoby.free.fr\/Fisheye_history_short\/Projections\/Various_lens_projection.html\" title=\"fisheye projections\">excellent article<\/a> a fisheye is not merely a <em>really wide<\/em> lens but rather a completely different way of projecting the three dimensional world onto a two dimensional plane.
